This Thursday I will be giving a special presentation in place of my normal english class about guns in America. Lately there have been several high profile mass shootings which have been widely covered in Japanese news.

From Japan’s perspective as a country with strict gun regulations, the fact that guns haven’t been heavily regulated, regardless of whether shootings are happening or not, is hard to believe. In this presentation I will talk about the problems relating to guns in America and the difficulty there is in regulating them.

I want to give lots of perspective to the topic of guns in America by talking about America’s history, culture, national character, and laws. Afterwards we will have a group discussion where I hope we can delve deeper into the issues of guns and freedom.

近年のアメリカ乱射事件については、日本でもメディアで多く取り上げられているので、皆さんご存知かと思います。銃に対する規制が厳しい日本から見れば、アメリカのような事件が多く起きているにも関わらず、未だ規制されないことは信じがたいことかもしれません。

今回はアメリカの銃に関する諸問題、規制の困難さ等について、アメリカの歴史、文化、国民性や法律の視点から、銃規制の困難さを紹介します。グループ討議を通して、アメリカの「銃」と「銃」について考える時間になればと思います。
