こんにちは、ハナです! 今月のセミナーはライト兄弟についてでした。1900年前後、ヨーロッパやアメリカには、必死で飛行機を作ろうとしていた人がたくさんいました。ほとんどはエンジンや羽根に集中したが、ライト兄弟はそういう技術はもう充分あるのでコントロールの問題に取り組みました。実験を3年ほど渡って100％コントロールできるグライダーを作り出せて、その次の年の1903年、新しいデザインのものにプロペラやエンジンを設備し、ノースカロライナ州キティホークでついに人類初の動力飛行を果たせました。
This month’s seminar was about the Wright Brothers. Around the 1900’s, people all over Europe and America were racing to make the first airplane. Most focused on the engine or wings, but the Wrights put their focus on the problem of control. After 3 years of tests to develop full control of their gliders, they fitted a new craft with propellers and an engine. In 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they successfully made mankind’s first powered flight.
最初はニュースにピックアップされなくて世間にほとんど知られなかったが、技術をさらに磨いて、新しい飛行機のデモンストレーションをアメリカやフランスですると、世界中の注目を集めました。兄弟の出身地オハイオ州と初めて飛んだ場所であるノースカロライナ州では、二人への記念物はたくさんあり、ワシントンDCのスミソニアンでは、あの有名の飛行機実物は永久に展示されています。
This was completely ignored by the news at first and hardly known to the world. But they continued to improve their technology and after demonstrations in America and France, they gained recognition from around the world. There are memorials for them in their home state of Ohio and the state they first flew in, North Carolina, and the actual plane they took their first flight in is displayed permanently at the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
