Lying northeast of Saga City, Kanzaki is a long and narrow area intersected by the Chikugo and Jobaru rivers. Originally a village around the time of the Meiji Restoration, Kanzaki was raised to town status in 1893. While some of the other villages established at the same time were subsequently merged into Kanzaki in 1955, the remainder were merged into Chiyoda village (now town). Kanzaki became a city in 2006, absorbing Chiyoda town and Sefuri village to encompass all territories in the Kanzaki district.
As of 2025, Kanzaki Senior High School is a visit school that sees one of the Saga City ALTs twice a week.
