On Sunday I attended a very unique summer event in Arita (already for the second time since I came here), that is called Juhachi-ya (night of the 18th).

先週の日曜日に「十八夜」というユニークな夏祭りを見に行きました。（去年も行ったので、今回はもう二回目でした。）

As you can guess, it takes place every year on the night of August 18th and it is even called奇祭 (kisai) by the locals, which means “strange/ bizarre festival.

このお祭りは、毎年8月に開催されて、地元の人に「奇祭」とも呼ばれています。

This festival is said to originally have started as some kind of rain dance in a very hot summer in 1658. Since then supposedly every year, the people living in Arita`s Oogi district have gathered, crafted and practiced for this event.

このイベントの起源となったのは、1658年、有田郷が大干ばつに見舞われた時に、「雨ごい浮立」が行ったということです。それ以来、有田町大木宿地区に住んでいる人が、毎年、このお祭りを開催するために、集まったり、色々作ったり、練習したりします。

Then, on the night of 18th the parade of “musicians” and “fighters” start their long way through the whole Oogi district towards their destination, the Ryusenji-temple. You can already hear the sound of the big bell, they are carrying, the taiko drums, Japanese flutes and other traditional instruments from far away. When they reach Ryusenji, they keep playing while about 20 of the young men of the group prepare for one of the festival`s highlights: A “fighting performance”, (dotemakasho), where they split into two groups, run up to each other and literally fight, until someone tosses down water on them. I think, that you could call bizarre 😉

そしていよいよ、8月18日の夜になると、参加するメンバーによる浮立が、地区内を練り歩き、目的地は「龍泉寺」です。持っている大きい鐘や、太鼓など笛といった日本の伝統的な学期の音がすでに遠くから聞こえます。龍泉寺に着いたら、音楽団が奏で続けている間に、20人ぐらいの若い男性たちはこれからの一つ目の「ハイライト」のための準備を行います。それは、なんと喧嘩浮立「どてまかしょ」ということです。そこで、男性たちは、二つのグループに別れて、他の参加者に水をかけられるまでは、ぶつかり合い、取っ組み合ったり投げ飛ばしたりするということで、本当に奇妙だと言えます;)

The next big highlight is the setting up of the so-called Ja-mon – fireworks: a big wooden stake on which hand-made fireworks have been fixed is set on fire, – which results in a really unique fireworks spectatle!

その後、お寺の本堂から「じゃーもん」が登場しており、建てられてから、お祭りのクライマックスに迎えます。「じゃーもん」というのは、仕掛け花火が付いているという大きい木の棒とのことです。これに火をつけると、とても面白い花火が見られますよ！

Afterwards you can also enjoy a “real” fireworks display in the sky (there would not be a Japanese summer festival without them ;))

その後、普通の花火も楽しめます（日本の夏祭りは花火なしにはありえないのですね；））。

You should definitely mark your calendar for next year in August and make sure to experience this interesting festival, too!
