May/June Events Calender

Firefly Season 

May and June are the months to view fireflies around the river-areas of Saga. Takeo, Miyaki and Ogi are well-known spots for Fireflies.

Gatalympics 鹿島ガタリンピック (40th time) 

When: June 2nd (Sunday), 12pm start! 

Where: Kashima mud flats. 道の駅かしま 鹿島ガタリンピック会場

Join us in Kashima for Saga’s famous mud sport event. Held in the tidal zone of the Ariake sea, events like diving, cycling, swimming and relay are all performed here. Every year, the JETs compete as a team and as individuals, this year was organised by our lovely AJET Amaya. Regardless of whether-or-not you’re competing, it’s a great day to cheer on our friends and eat some Yatai (street cart food)! 

Yobuko Tug of War  

When: June 1st and 2nd (Saturday and Sunday) 

Where: Yobuko Area 

Saturday, Children’s event, 1pm start at 唐津市役所呼子市民センター

Sunday, Adult’s event, 12.30pm religious ceremony (神事), 1pm Opening Ceremony, 1.30pm start at 三神社前

Yobuko Tug of War is a local event that draws visitors from all over! Over the past years (and of course this year) our Yobuko ALT/Karatsu DR Cavin will be competing with his town area. When not battling it out, you’ll get to see him being paraded around town in his Samurai outfit as he is a Yobuko star!  

Yobuko Yosakoi  

When: June 23rd (Saturday) 10am~5pm 

Where: Yobuko Port Area (there are multiple stages to see performances)

呼子朝市商店街 

Yosakoi is a dance style originating from Kochi perfecture that has gained popularity across Japan. Dance troupes from Fukuoka, Saga and Sasebo will perform in Yobuko. If driving, be prepared for traffic as this is not a small event.  

Imari Okawachiyama Windchime Festival 

伊万里大川内山 風鈴まつり 

When: Mid-June to August (2024 dates not announced yet) 

Where: Imari Okawachiyama Town 

Imari’s hidden pottery village, Okawachiyama hosts a yearly windchime festival showcasing their ceramic making skills. 

Mikaeri no Taki Waterfall Hydrangea Festival 見帰りの滝 あじさいまつり 

When: End of June to end of Hydrangea bloom, light up from 7.20pm to 10pm 

Where: Mikaeri no Taki, Ouchi Town, Karatsu. 

Details not announced yet.

Hundreds of hydrangeas bloom around the waterfall in Ouchi town with accompanying light up. A car will be necessary to reach the site (In other years there has also been a shuttle bus to the location, but this is not confirmed). 

Live Music Event Nagasaki 

When: June 8th 

Where: Nagasaki 

A band composed of Nagasaki JETs will be performing their last live. Please RSVP. Details are posted on LINE. 

Fukuoka Kabuki  

When: June 

Where: Fukuoka Hakataza theater. 

Kabuki is only held twice a year in Fukuoka. It’s a great chance to see traditional Japanese culture. 

Reminders

Nanayama Waterfall Climb regesitation has opened, May 1st.

In June and July leavers will be busy preparing for departure so please keep this in mind when planning things.

July/August will be fireworks season across Japan. More events and details will be released but the Karatsu Hamasaki fireworks are 8pm friday July 26th). 

AJET/DR events the works 

Yobuko fishing trip (interest can be expressed on LINE poll). 

(Late June or) Usually early July Leavers Party will be held. 

May saw a small Karaoke Party completed through AJETs help in Saga City. I hope all those that came enjoyed it!
