Event Report: 1st Arita Porcelain Making Tour

As most of you probably know, one of my (very enjoyable) duties as a CIR here in Arita is to organize and guide tours for English-speaking foreigners in Japan. During my Arita Autumn Tour as well as the Hinamatsuri Tour I was asked by several people, if I it wouldn`t be nice to also have a tour where they could actually make their own porcelain. Thus the idea of offering an “Arita porcelain-making tour” was born.

御存知だと思いますが、有田町ＣＩＲの仕事の一つは、外国人観光客のための英語ツアーを開催するということで、いつもとても楽しいです。そこで、最近の「秋ツアー」の時や、「雛の焼き物祭りツアー」の時にも、「自分で焼き物の作品を作るツアーをしませんか」という提案がありました。このように、「有田ろくろ体験ツアー」を開くアイディアが生まれました。

The tour took place on February 15 and March 15; due to a limited number of potter`s wheels available unfortunately only 12 people could participate and the spots filled up very fast. English-speaking foreigners from Saga prefecture as well as from Nagasaki prefecture decided to come all the way to Arita to make their own unique piece of porcelain.

このツアーは2月15日と3月15日にありました。あいにく、ろくろの数が少ないので、12人しか参加できなく、あっという間に満員になってしまいました。英語が話せる外国人の参加者は、「世界に一つしかない」自分だけのオリジナルの磁器作品を製作するために、佐賀や長崎県内から有田まで来ました。

During the first tour on February 15, we first went to the Arita Ceramics Home Plaza (a street full of porcelain shops), to give the participants an impression of the various different Arita-yaki porcelain styles and to give the opportunity to do some shopping.

2月15日の最初のツアーの時に、まず（一つの道路に数多くの焼き物の店がある）有田陶磁の里プラザ「卸団地」に行ったのです。参加者はそこを自由に回って、様々な有田焼の様式とデザインを見て、ショッピングすることができました。

Afterwards we went to Rokuro-za (); fee: 1.950 Yen/ piece; open everyday 10am~4pm, except for Thursdays), one of the pottery studios in Arita were visitors can work at the potter`s wheel. Here the participants decided what to form and began working at the potter`s wheel, while an experiences potter helped them and gave hints on what to do better. Overall I was really impressed by the porcelain items the participants made, as I know from my own experience, how difficult it is to actually throw clay on the potter`s wheel!

その後、ろくろ体験ができる「ろくろ座」という工房に行きました。ここで参加者はまず作品の形を決めて、プロの指導の下、磁器を形成し始めました。私もろくろ体験をしたことがあるので、ろくろで形成するのがいかに難しいか分かるため、参加者の皆さんの作った作品に感銘を受けました。

On March 15 then, we all met again in Arita, and everyone was already really excited to finally get to see their fired porcelain items. But before going back to Rokuro-za we first paid a visit to Genemon-kiln ( http://www.gen-emon.co.jp/) to learn about the traditional porcelain-making techniques in Arita. I already wrote about Genemon-kiln last year when I did a one-day trainee there, and I have visited the kiln so often, that it has really become my favorite kiln to go to. No matter how often I visit this kiln, I am always really impressed with how much effort they put in making every single porcelain item!

3月15日にまた有田で集合し、皆さんが、一回焼いた自分の作品を見るのを楽しみにしてわくわくしていたと思います。ですが、ろくろ座に行く前に、有田の伝統的な焼き物作りについて勉強するために、源右衛門窯 ( http://www.gen-emon.co.jp/) に見学をしに行きました。私は去年あそこで一日の研修を受けて、ＣＩＲホームページでもそれについてすでに記事を書きましたが、それ以外にも源右衛門窯をよく見学して、有田の一番好きな窯元になったかもしれません（笑）。なぜかというと、この窯元をどんなによく訪れても、いつまでも職人さん1人1人の丁寧な手作業に感動するからです。

After lunch we then went to Rokuro-za where the participants this time could paint their porcelain with the blue underglaze color “gosu” that is traditionally used on Arita-yaki porcelain. As the underglaze paint has to resist high temperatures during this second firing, only a few colors like the blue “gosu” qualify for this, so we could only make “blue and white” – porcelain on this tour. But the participants have the opportunity to come back to Rokuro-za and do some colorful overglaze painting (for only 500 Yen) after the second firing, too, if they want to, so I think this is a good deal.

その後、昼食をしてから、有田焼の伝統的な「呉須」という絵の具を使って下絵付をするためにろくろ座に行きました。次の、本焼成の際は、焼き物を非常に高い温度で焼きあげるので、「呉須」などのように下絵付で使用できる絵の具が限られているから、今回はカラフルではなく、「染付」の磁器を作りました。ですが、参加者は後でもう一度自分の作品をろくろ座に持って行けば、よりカラフルな色の絵具を使う上絵付が（500円だけで）できるので、なかなかいいと思います。

Again everyone painted (or wrote) really unique designs on their porcelain items, so I am really curious how they will turn out after the second firing.

皆さんは本当に個性のある唯一で面白いデザインを考えて描いたので、焼きあがった作品はとても楽しみです。
