January Events Calendar

In addition to the special events below, there are lots of illuminations to check out across the prefecture, and major shrines and temples are their busiest all year with Hatsumoude (“first shrine/temple visit”)-goers.
The Hagakure and Chuushingura (The Story of the 47 Samurai)
  • When: November 11 to January 15, closed December 29 to 31
  • Where: Saga Castle History Museum
Various New Years Events at Saga Castle
  • Details: There are a lot of free events planned throughout January. Many of these are for children (or at least are probably for children?? The page doesn’t make it clear.), but these are the details specifically for the adult kimono workshop.

The Inspiration for and Rival of Arita Porcelain: Chinese Porcelain
  • Details: 554 pieces of Chinese porcelain, which both inspired and greatly influenced Arita’s industry, will be on display
  • When: December 9 to January 15, closed Mondays and December 29 to 31, but open January 2 and 9
  • Where: Saga Castle History Museum
The Charms of Old Art
  • When: December 10 to January 15, closed December 29 to 31, January 10 and Monday except for January 2 and 9
  • Where: Saga Prefectural Art Museum, Exhibition Room 2
New Year Walking
  • Details: Go for a walk to see the first sunrise and wish for a happy year
  • When: Gather at 6:45, walk starts at 7:00
  • Where: Start and end at Sports Park Kawasoe Training House, watch the sunrise from Oohashi Bridge.
Gorgeous Hina Doll Display
  • When: January 3 to March 31, 9:00 to 18:00
  • Where: Shida no Kura, Ureshino City
Nakajima Miyuki Concert Movie Display
  • Details: Watch a recording of her concerts in Tokyo and Osaka
  • When: January 7 to 27,
  • Where: 109 Cinemas Saga, Saga City
  • Cost: 2300 yen in advance, 2500 yen the day-of
Gishi Chakai Tea Ceremony
  • When: January 14 and 15, 10:00 to 15:00
  • Where: Saga Castle History Museum
  • Cost: 500 yen
Ureshino Attakamatsuri
  • Details: The onsen area of Ureshino will be lit with lanterns, and Ureshinoyu Tofu, steamed egs and sweet potatoes will be sold for 100 yen on weekends. Partner ryokan will offer discount tickets.
  • When: January 28 to February 12
  • Where: Downtown Ureshino Onsen
