Arrgghh! ハナです。 今夏ということで、私には夏のイメージが強い海賊、pirates、について話させていただきました。Pirateという人は水上で犯罪を起こす人で今も存在するが、今回は17と18世紀のパイレッツに集中しました。

最初はパイレッツを止められる国がなくてカリビアンや大西洋を通る船が次々と海賊に襲われました。遠くからその海賊船は普通の船に見えたが、獲物に近づくとJolly Rogerという、あのどくろが描いた旗を揚げました。これを見た船員は海賊だとわかって、そのまま降参するか海賊と戦うかを決めないといけません。争いになると、海賊たちは次血の色の赤い旗を揚げて、全力でビシビシ戦いました。勝ったら、海賊は船員が運搬している品物だけではなくて、船そのものもゲットできたので、この時期の海賊たちは設けてました。

しかし、こういう状態が続けたら貿易は大変なので、英国などは海軍を何百倍強くさせ、19世紀までにカリビアンの海賊を絶滅させました。今はこういう海賊はもいないが、Treasure IslandやPirates of the Caribbean等の作品のおかげ、現在でも多くの人はパイレッツについてロマンチックな冒険者イメージを持っています。

Arrgghh! This month I talked about a topic I closely associate with summer: pirates. A pirate is anyone who commits a crime on water, but this time we focused on the famed pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries.

At first, pirates were an unstoppable force, fiercely attacking ships in the Caribbean and Atlantic. They would usually fly no flag to pass a regular ship, then would fly their Jolly Roger when approaching a boat to attack. This boat would recognize the flag a pirate symbol and choose to either surrender or fight. If they chose to fight, the pirates would then raise a blood red flag and fight without mercy. Since winning pirates would then get not just the items being transported, but also the captured ship itself, many pirates profited greatly off their trade.

Of course this caused great problems for trade, and eventually Britain strengthened its naval fleet and extinguished the Caribbean pirates. Now these people are long gone, but thanks to works such as Treasure Island and Pirates of the Caribbean, they live on as romantic adventures in the minds of many people.
