１２月ということで、今月のセミナーのテーマはクリスマスにしました！日本でも誰でも知っているような大きな日になっていますが、アメリカやヨーロッパでは昔からもっとも大切な日です。半世紀前ぐらいまで完全にキリスト教のもので、現在はクリスチャンではない人の間で俗的な祝日として祝っていますが、そのルーツは実はキリスト教よりさかのぼるといわれています。 古代ローマやキリスト教が導入された前のヨーロッパの伝統が入れ加えて、そして数百年間の現状の影響を受けて、現在のものに成り立ちました。

In honor of December, this month’s seminar topic was Christmas! It is now well known in Japan, but has been an important day in America and Europe for generations. Until about 50 years ago Christmas was solely a Christian holiday, but now it’s celebrated as a secular holiday by non-Christians. It is also said that the roots of this holiday hark back further than Christianity itself, to the days of the Romans and the traditions of Pagan Europe, and it also evolved with the times over the past server centuries.

クリスマスのほかに、ユダヤ教のハヌカーやアフリカ系アメリカ人のクワンザなど、１２月には面白い祝日がたくさんありますので、来年のこの時期、それらを紹介したいと思います！

There are many other interesting December holidays, such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, and I hope to introduce those next year!
